The Origins of Tesoro: A Bond Forged Through Music
Tesoro’s roots trace back to the teenage years of founding members Brian Scott and Justin Fernandez, two musicians from vastly different musical backgrounds who discovered a shared love for Spanish guitar and the expressive power of flamenco fusion.
Brian Scott’s journey began at just five years old, when he first learned classical guitar technique—starting with a cereal box and a ruler to perfect posture and finger placement. While he developed a foundation in classical music, his musical path soon veered toward hard rock and metal, eventually leading him to join a metal band as a teenager. Despite his passion for electric guitar, his early acoustic training never left him.
Justin Fernandez, the youngest of six children, was immersed in music from an early age, starting piano lessons at five before transitioning to flamenco guitar at 12. His Spanish heritage and family’s love for flamenco led him to study under some of Arizona’s most accomplished flamenco guitarists, developing a deep appreciation for the art form. By his early teens, Justin was already performing concerts around the state.
Their paths converged in high school guitar class, where Brian and Justin’s spontaneous jam sessions quickly evolved into an artistic partnership. Though their influences varied—Brian’s roots in rock and metal, Justin’s deep connection to flamenco—the two found common ground in their shared admiration for artists like the Gipsy Kings, Jesse Cook, Ottmar Liebert, and Rodrigo y Gabriela. Over time, their musical synergy gave rise to a signature sound—one that infused the intensity of rock, the percussive rhythms of rumba flamenca, and even the intricate, heavy riffing inspired by bands like Tool.

With two studio albums, two live CDs, and hundreds of performances across the Southwest, Tesoro has built a reputation for electrifying live shows that transport audiences through a fusion of Spanish rhythms, intricate guitar work, and modern rock influences.
